What are the main reasons that sportspeople see chiropractors for chiropractic care? If sports people are seeing chiropractors then can anybody benefit in the same way? Yes! The benefits that are seen with sportspeople are just as relevant with any member of the general public. Dr Andy Green (Doctor of Chiropractic) at Reflex Spinal Health in Reading explains. “I have had the fantastic opportunity to work with Olympic athletes and Premier League footballers. When i work with at that level of sport we do have to care for injury. However, the majority of the work i do is in optimising function and improving performance. In my opinion the general public see pain and function as being all-or-nothing, i.e. that no pain is good and pain is bad. However, you could have no pain but be clearly demonstrating clear objective signs of aberrant function. This is the region where we can demonstrate to athletes, or non-athletes, objective findings such as improved muscle strength, increase range of motion, better reflexes and less tenderness to touch.”
Here are four of the many reasons why athletes benefit from chiropractic care:
Chiropractic care improves proprioception
OK, so what is proprioception? Proprioception is defined as the sense of the relative position of neighbouring parts of the body and strength of effort being employed in movement. More simplistically, it is the ability of your body to balance and control itself in space and against gravity. Depending on the sport athletes are prone to injury, especially if it is a contact sport. Chiropractic care restores function to the body and nervous system. This, in turn, improves proprioception.
Chiropractic care improves movement and flexibility
A recent research study published in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics found that people who received chiropractic adjustments found an approximate 10% improvement in movement and response time compared to those not under care. When the spinal vertebrae and peripheral joints are in correct alignment the body will move easily. For any athlete flexibility is crucial because it leads to improved function and also decreases the prevalence of injury.
Chiropractic care improves balance
Chiropractic adjustments improve balance to the entire body by restoring the neural function throughout the body. By removing any mechanical, and neural, restrictions chiropractic allows signals to flow freely between the brain and the body.
Chiropractic care decreases injury risk
Receiving regular chiropractic adjustments decreases the risk of injury. Injury risk lowers because function is improved. This functional improvement occurs by improving joint range of motion, increased muscular strength, improved neural function and decreased joint inflammation.
